Keep ‘em Buying: Abbott & Costello’s 1942 War Bond Drive

On Exhibition December 7, 2019 to February 2, 2020

Did you know that in 1942 Abbott and Costello toured seventy-eight cities and twenty-two states,
raising money by selling War Bonds? In total, they raised $85,000,000.00 for the war effort.

Keep ‘em Buying: Abbott & Costello’s 1942 War Bond Drive celebrated this amazing journey conducted
by comedy duo Bud Abbott and Lou Costello. The exhibition shared highlights of their whirlwind tour,
while framing their efforts within the larger context of WWII on the home front in Paterson, New Jersey.

One highlight of the exhibition was the debut of the Loving Cup trophy, originally presented to Lou
Costello at Baeurle Stadium, Eastside High School by the local War Savings Committee in August 1942.
This artifact returned to the city when it was donated to the museum in 2018.

The exhibition’s opening reception included a visit from impressionists Gil “Bud” Palmer and Lou Sciara,
to whom Mayor Andre Sayegh ceremonially handed the Loving Cup trophy, commemorating the
artifact’s return to Paterson.

This exhibit was a collaboration with Karen Winterfeld Cucco, Director of the “All the Way from
Paterson” New Jersey chapter of the Abbott and Costello Fan Club. Want to learn more about the exhibit? Check out our links below:
