Remember Doby

Lawrence “Larry” Eugene Doby was the first African American baseball player in the American League and second in the Major Leagues. Doby moved to Paterson at the age of fourteen and three years later, he became a professional baseball player with the Newark Eagles. On July 5, 1947, Larry Doby made his debut as no. 14 of the Cleveland Indians, playing his first game in the Major Leagues. By integrating baseball, Doby became a pioneer in the fight for civil rights.

Instructions

Making the Memory Cards

Step 1- Click here to download and print the memory cards

Step 2- Click here to download and print the Doby facts

Step 3- Cut out the memory cards and Doby facts

Step 4- Fold the memory cards in half

Step 5- Glue or tape the bottom and side (keep the top open)

Step 6- Once the glue dries, slip a Doby fact inside the corresponding memory card

How to Play
  • Play solo or with a partner
  • Mix up the memory cards and arrange them randomly in a grid with the matches face down
  • The goal is to match all the cards by remembering or guessing where the match is located
  • Flip over two cards. If they match keep them face up and read the Doby fact inside, then try to find the next match. If they don’t match, flip them back over. If you’re playing with a partner, it’s now their turn. If you’re playing solo, try again.
  • Once all matches are flipped, the game ends
