Lenape Dwellings

When European settlers arrived in Paterson, it was home to the Lenape people. The Lenape called their home Lenapehoking or “land of the Lenape.” This land included all of what is now New Jersey, eastern Pennsylvania, southeastern New York State, northern Delaware and a small part of southwestern Connecticut. They lived in wigwams and longhouses, in harmony amongst themselves and with nature. Wigwams were made of wooden poles bent to form a dome and covered in tree bark or other natural materials.
