In 1837, Thomas Rogers, of Rogers, Ketchum and Grosvenor, produced the Sandusky, one of the earliest locomotives built in the United States. From 1850-1860, the Rogers Locomotive and Machine Works was the leading manufacturer of locomotives in the country. The success of his company was soon copied. At its height, Paterson was home to three locomotive manufacturers.
